Grantham Hospital and the Department of Pediatric Cardiology, Queen Mary Hospital
for many years, Grantham Hospital provided comprehensive treatment of heart and lung diseases in Hong Kong. Located in Wong Chuk Hang in Aberdeen , Grantham Hospital opened in 1957 and was named for Sir Alexander Grantham, a former governor of Hong Kong. The hospital had previously been run by the Hong Kong Tuberculosis, Chest and Heart Diseases Association. In 1982 it began advancing into a cardiothoracic center.
In September 2008, the Department of Pediatric Cardiology (DPC) moved to Queen Mary Hospital, where it is now located. Aside from providing 24-hour service for emergency heart operations, DPC is the leading department in the territory offering medical care to babies and children with heart problems.
The DPC primarily offers specialist service in cardiothoracic surgery, cardiac medicine, cardiac pediatrics, tuberculosis, chest medicine and cardio-pulmonary infirmary. Day care service for cardiac catheterization and related procedures, comprehensive rehabilitation service for cardiac and chest patients in the community and outreaching palliative care service for cancer patients in Hong Kong Island are provided.
The department works with the University of Hong Kong to provide specialist training. It promotes heart/chest health together with other agencies. The department does this by organizing events such as health talks and other health promotion activities.
The Department of Pediatric Cardiology undertakes pioneering research projects to benefit the scientific and medical community and aims to continue these quality breakthroughs. In 1992 the first heart transplant ever in Hong Kong was performed at Grantham, and more recently, in 2001, the first implementation of ventricular assist device in Hong Kong was performed at the hospital as well.
